Current Market Environment
With trading operations being dramatically scaled back at many integrated energy companies, there is a renewed focus on operational excellence and driving more profits out of asset-based operations, such as natural gas pipelines. This increased focus on improved operations comes at a time when daily demand is becoming increasingly more difficult to predict, due to the amount of gas deliveries to "peaking" units of the large electric generators that only operate for short periods of time when energy demand is high.

As a result, pipeline planners and operators need enhanced analytical tools to help them make better decisions about what compressors to run and how to split flows in order to meet customer requirements while minimizing fuel costs. Numerical simulations, dynamic programming, and model relaxation - the most commonly used approaches to solve the pipeline optimization problem - either sacrifice the quality of the result or don't scale and therefore are not effective across large-scale, complex pipeline networks.
